AEROBI presents Are.You.Ready?
AEROBI presents Are.You.Ready?
An immersive installation, participative action and a video production that will take place from the 3 April – 5 April 2014 at theWhiskey Bond, Glasgow.
A life review is a phenomenon a during near-death experience, in which a person rapidly sees much or the totality of his or her life history in extreme detail.
AEROBI is the collaborative circle between Icelandic artists Darri Lorenzen, Kolbeinn Hugi, Ragnar Jonasson. The circle is instigating a series of exhibitions that aim to interrogate memory and the construction of cultural identities through ‘near death experiences’, a point of trauma that provokes wildly different sensorial and psychological effects depending on its subject. Combining surreal narrative, biographical research, performance, and sensorial experiments each edition will take place in a different location and will centre on a different subject or personality.
Visitors to each show will enter AEROBI’s near death machine – a psychoanalytic film-set, where mundane and gran scenes will from a chosen subject’s life, will be generated and performed live on camera. A script writer will frantically write. Scenarios to be ferried to performers on the fly. A cameraman will rove around the space, giving a sense a narrative is being spontaneously constructed, documented – to be mediated in an undefined future.
Within a ‘near death experience’ notions of time, memory and narrative are disrupted, a life may flash before the subjects eyes in an instant, or a second may be stretched into lifetime.
This Is, almost certainly not, Your Life.
Like Sam Beckett, the time-travelling protagonist of seminal 1990’s American series Quantum Leap, who would transiently inhabit other people’s bodies across time, in each show, the visitor will be thrown into an participative experience and have to decrypt dislocated actions to work out an underlying persona that connects them.
A damp texture of a silicone mouse mat, the faint smell of Red-Bull against pine floor cleaner. As a life flashes before your eyes, that is not your own, suddenly the mundane takes on an uncanny significance.
During the Glasgow International, the Whiskey Bond will host this edition in AEROBI’s Near Death Experiences. The group’s test subject is world-renowned house music DJ David Guetta.
Recently described as not the king of pop, but rather its managing director, David Guetta occupies a unique position as pop icon – likeable, omnipresent, synonymous with the popular ends of dance music yet mysteriously absent from tabloid speculation or backstory. As such, Guetta as a subject becomes a screen to explore notions of both jet-set grandeur and the banal.
The group aim to reverse-engineer a psychology of the ineffable house DJ David Guetta through fragmented vignettes from the Frenchman’s biography. Twisting motifs from the DJ’s media presence, from early albums, interviews, youtube fans comments and sponsors into a surreal psychodrama both on and offscreen.
For the project at the Whiskey Bond AEROBI will be collaborating with Dan Meththananda.
