Annabelle Von Girsewald introduces her previous work based on the theme of the ‘home’ in a lecture on

The Icelandic Art Center in collaboration with the Association of Icelandic Artists support the network of Icelandic contemporary art professionals by inviting international art professionals and curators to visit Iceland. Every guest has a tailor made program based on their specific interest within the arts.
Annabelle von Girsewald is the first guest of the program this year. Von Girsewald born 1972 in the USA is an exhibition maker based in Berlin. She has worked for museums and galleries in Frankfurt am Main, London and Berlin. Her academic ‘home’ themed shows started in 2005 in Frankfurt am Main. This first being a trilogy of exhibitions in her apartment in Frankfurt am Main Home is where the Heart is, Home is where the Hurt is, and Homing Desire. This series was inspired by Rosi Braidotti’s summer school NOI♀SE in Utrecht. Research interests lie between curatorial methods, exhibition design and museum architecture. Her curatorial practice has been further influenced by studying and working for Hans Ulrich Obrist and by her PhD research on Frederick Kiesler.
Annabelle von Girsewald graduated with a BA from the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee in Women’s Studies and Art History. Her MA education in American Studies and Empirische Kulturwissenschaft took place at the University of Tübingen, Germany. In 1998 and 1999 she was a student at the NOI♀SE summer school in Turku/ Åbo and in Utrecht. Her MA thesis, Gendered Images on Display. Staging Body and Identity at the Love Parade, Berlin 2000 culminated out of the research project “Tanzlust” at the Ludwig-Uhland Institute. In 2006 she was a PhD candidate at the London Consortium a collaborative program with Birkbeck College, Architectural Association, ICA, Science Museum and Tate Gallery.
Currently she is working on projects with Hreinn Fridfinnsson, Styrmir Örn Gundmundsson, Egill Saebjörnsson in Germany and in other European cities.
Von Girsewald will have a lecture where she will introduce her previous work based on the theme of the ‘home’. The lecture will take place at the Association of Icelandic Artists in Hafnarstræti 16, Wednesday 25 January at 20:00.
