Cirkelbroen by Ólafur Elíasson | Copenhagen
Nordea-fonden invites the general public to attend the grand opening of the Cirkelbroen bridge in Copenhagen’s Christianshavn district on Saturday 22 August 2015, 11 am – 2 pm. The bridge was designed by artist Olafur Eliasson and is a gift from Nordeafonden to the City of Copenhagen.
Cirkelbroen will be officially opened on Saturday 22 August 2015, 11 am – 2 pm at a festive celebration where everyone is welcome. The bridge links Christiansbro to Applebys Plads across the southern entrance to Christianshavn Canal and makes it possible for the people of Copenhagen to walk, run or cycle along the Inner Waterfront in a contiguous line.
Artist Olafur Eliasson developed a swivel bridge using a sailing boat as his visual source of inspiration. The bridge comprises five staggered, differently-sized circular platforms, each with a mast in the centre. “Cirkelbroen makes it easier for the people of Copenhagen to move about in their city. But Cirkelbroen is much more than just a bridge. It is a work of art. It is a new meeting place. It is a vantage point along the waterfront. We know that many people have been waiting a long time for this bridge, and we hope that many people will attend the official opening on 22 August,” says Mogens Hugo, chairman of the board for Nordea-fonden, a foundation which supports the good life. Artist Olafur Eliasson has this to say about the bridge: “I hope that people will use the bridge as a place to meet – a public space. In contrast to the long, straight waterfront, Cirkelbroen will reduce speeds, change the direction of gazes, and invite people to take a break. Hesitating en route is a bodily thought – and there is room for such thoughts in Copenhagen’s urban spaces.”
Frank Jensen, Lord Mayor of the City of Copenhagen, will officially receive the gift on behalf of the city at the official opening on 22 August. Speeches will be given by Mogens Hugo, chairman of the board for Nordea-fonden, artist Olafur Eliasson, and Lord Mayor Frank Jensen.
