Sequences VI April 5th – 14th
Sequences real time art festival launches for the sixth time.
Official opening of Sequences VI will find place in the Living Art Museum
Friday April 5th at 20:00
The selection of the honorary artist, Gretar Reynisson, reflects the focus of Sequences VI. He shares his experiences of everyday life, where he deals with the passing moment in a special way. The works by other artists selected for the festival fluctuate between the collective and general and the personal and unique. They provide insight into the different ways in which we cope with time and take control of our own lives. In the midst of humdrum repetition, however, moments both significant and trivial may sidetrack our plans and life can take a new direction.
The exhibition venues are in the city centre with the aim that the audience will enjoy each work in close proximity, in intimate and singular settings. Artists and exhibition spaces have been invited to organize independent events in tandem with the Main Programme, all of which are listed in the Off Venue Programme.
Sequences VI is proud to name Gretar Reynisson as this year’s honorary artist. He is invited to take part in this real time art festival with his intriguing collection of works, Decade, which are in fact evidence of an extensive durational performance. For the first time the entirety of his opus is presented to the public. At the turn of the century, Reynisson took the decision to break from exhibition-making and work every day on this project, from 1 January 2001 to 31 December 2010; collecting, counting and archiving the routine of the everyday. The white shirt that he wore became part of a subtle performance, as did the pillow that he slept on and the glass that he drank out of. The daily routine became an ongoing artistic process, the context of which was the archetypal question concerning the boundary between life and art. Works that were created on a daily basis over ten years are now on display for only ten days. An exhibition catalogue is published by Útúrdúr on this occasion.
