Styrmir Örn at Cultura Surplus, Mexico
This Friday, January 23, Icelandic artist Styrmir Örn Guðmundsson will conduct an experimental dance workshop in the gallery space of Cultura Surplus in Mexico City. First activation of testing space for the gallery located in Colonia Roma.
Through an hybrid methodology, Guðmundsson will lead the audience through different situations where body gradually discover tools to achieve both Break Dance movements and the recognition of different symbols belonging to Pop culture and Hip hop dance. Meanwhile, with the help of assistants, the artist will activate a collection of artworks (roundels), which will serves as floors for the workshop (cyphers), the works will also represent the heraldic of each team. Participants are going to work in groups, in pairs and individually. The main objective of the workshop is to develop different strategies of seduction, execution and creative freedom through dance competition.

Styrmir Örn Guðmundsson (Reykjavik, 1984) studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and the Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam. His recent work has been presented at the 55th edition of the Venice Biennale (2013), CAC Vilnius, Lithuania (2013), Bud, Nordic Countries (2013), Streaming Museum, New York (2013) and Crikoteca, Krakow (2012) .
Lives and works in Amsterdam, Reykjavik and Warsaw.
