The residency program at Skaftfell – Center for Visual Art, East Iceland, aims to create and nurture an environment for inspiration, focus, and experiment. The residencies are self-directed and provide, space, time and solitude for research and/or for the production of work. The program is best suited for visual artists but artists with interdisciplinary practices and curators are also welcome to apply.
Opportunities the artists-in-residence can participate in include: artist talks, open studios, workshops for the local community and for primary school children and the Skaftfell educational program. Longer-term artists-in-residence may also propose an exhibition in Seyðisfjörður in conclusion to their stay.
The applicant may choose the duration of a residency at Skaftfell between 1-6 months in a private or shared residency. Applications for a residency period of 2 months or longer are given preference.
In 2018 Skaftfell only offers one grant for a German artist, courtesy of Goethe-Institut Dänemark. German artists are eligible to apply for a two month residency in 2018 including a travel grant, per diem and some material budget.
Skaftfell, Center for Visual Art in East Iceland, celebrates its 20th organizational anniversary next year. To mark the occasion the center calls for proposals for the 2018 summer exhibition in the 150 sq m Skaftfell gallery. Preferably the proposal should refer to the long-term collaboration between Skaftfell and the Technical Museum of East Iceland, also located in Seyðisfjörður. The museum collection and workshops can be utilised but the exhibition framework and execution is open-ended.
