Gudmundur Thoroddsen (b. 1980) graduated with BA-degree from Iceland Academy of the Arts in 2003 and an MFA-degree from School of Visual Arts in New York in 2011.
Gudmundur has taken part in many group and solo exhibitions in Iceland, New York and Europe. Solo’s include Father´s Fathers in 2012, Hobby and Work in 2013 and Dismantled Spirits in 2016 at Asya Geisberg Gallery and Colorsynthesis in Reykjavik Art Museum. His work has been reviewed in publications such as Artforum, The New York Times, Time Out New York, Twin Magazine and Dazed Digital. He is the recipient of numerous grants.
Gudmundur is represented by Asya Geisberg Gallery in New York.
Gudmundur’s work glorifies, makes fun of and criticizes men and patriarchy. The humorous work is done in diverse but traditional mediums such as clay, watercolor, drawing and painting. The imagery consist mainly of bearded men occupied in shenanigans such as playing basketball, brewing beer and hunting. In addition to that many are seen urinate and farting across the picture plane.
