Svanborg Matthíasdóttir

Svanborg Matthíasdóttir (b. 1958.)  studied painting at The Icelandic College of Art and Crafts, and at The Jan Van Akademie in Maastricht Holland.

In her  latest series of paintings that she started in 2011 and is still in process, Svanborg is working with two parallel “stories”. The personal story, the “inner” story, is a depiction of memories, recaptured from photos taken when studying at the JVE. A tale of travels, visiting museums and galleries, looking at art, together with friends. Stories, portraying particular persons, in a world/time gone by.  The recreation of forms, gestures, light, reflection and atmosphere of introspection.

The universal story, the “outer” story of these paintings, reflects on aspects of the phenomenon; exhibition, the exhibit, to exhibit, to see, to be seen. The relationship between the viewer and what is being viewed. When the viewer becomes a part of the view. The interaction between the space, the art, the artist and the viewer, inside and outside of the painting.

For the past decade Svanborg has also been making Artist’s books. There her subject is experimetation with the form, with materials, the composition, color and various tecniques.
