Long Are the Trials of Man – A retrospective

A retrospective exhibition showing works by Þorvaldur Þorsteinsson (1960-2013) will open on August 29th 2020, during Akureyri’s annual town festival. The project is a collaboration between Akureyri Art Museum and Hafnarborg, Centre of Culture and Fine Art, in Hafnarfjörður, where it will be on view early 2021.

Þorsteinsson was a productive artist and teacher who in his career made use of most art-mediums. In addition to creating visual artwork he wrote novels, plays, poetry and music. He became well known in Iceland for The Pocket Theatre, a play performed on the Icelandic National Radio in 1991 and later on television. His novel The Message Pouch was an instant success when it was published in 1986 and was later dramatized and performed in The National Theatre of Iceland, as a musical in 1993. His four books about Betterby have been translated into several languages and Reykjavík City Theatre staged his play And Björk of Course in 2002.

Þorsteinsson held numerous solo exhibitions, both in Iceland and abroad, and participated in international group exhibitions all over. He would have turned sixty on November 7th 2020 and on that occasion the Akureyri Art Museum will hold a symposium about his lifework, on his birthday
