The Art Scene is Thriving in Iceland, and It Can Truly Be Said That the Year Starts with Great Energy in the Visual Arts.

Currently, the most prominent exhibitions are part of the Icelandic Photography Festival, an international photography festival held every two years. For example, on Friday, the exhibition Intimacies of the Everyday will open at the National Gallery of Iceland, showcasing over 60 photographs by renowned international artists, with Sally Mann likely being the most famous among them. There are a total of 14 exhibition venues associated with the photography festival, ranging from large museums to small gallery spaces. Another major group exhibition, featuring international artists, is Is This North? at the Nordic House. The artists come from the vast northern regions, as described in the exhibition text, and the exhibition was previously shown at the Akureyri Art Museum.

It is estimated that between 20-30 visual art exhibitions will open in January alone, most of them in the capital area, but also at the Akureyri Art Museum. This weekend, three exhibitions will open there: The Hidden Lady, an exhibition by Hulda Vilhjálmsdóttir curated by Hrafnhildur Gissurardóttir; Kristján Guðmundsson: First Impressions with eight works by the artist in the exhibition Eight Etchings; and Ladies and Gentlemen, an exhibition by Þórður Hans Baldursson and Þórunn Elísabet Sveinsdóttir.

Icelandic artists are exhibiting their works around the world, at the moment in Europe from Silkeborg in Denmark, where Helgi Þorgils Friðjónsson is showing his work in the exhibition Livsånde i Næsebor, to Leuven in Belgium where Ívar Glói Gunnarsson Breiðfjörð is exhibiting at Cas-co with the exhibition fluff.
