Libia Castro & Ólafur Ólafsson: In Search for Magic

For the project the artists along with Cycle Music and Art Festival and Reykjavík Arts Festival have invited a group of composers and musicians to join them in an open collaboration on composing music to the “Proposal for a new Constitution for the Republic of Iceland” written in 2011, by a democratically elected 25 member Constitutional Council (and later appointed by Parliament), in the aftermath of the economical and political meltdown of October 2008.

However, in spite of having been approved of by the population in a guiding public referendum on 20th of October 2012, the new proposal, often referred to as Iceland´s crowdsourced constitution—due to its writing process having been open for public to take part in—has not yet been approved of and implemented by Parliament.

This collective art project will therefore be engaging directly with a still open and ongoing political process and struggle and with it the artists wish to apply and test art’s potential magic and agency, taking part in the civic struggle for the implementation of the new constitutional proposal.

In choosing for a collective set-up/process, the artists wish to experiment, together with the composers / musicians, with finding ways to compose the piece collectively—reflecting on, and in continuation of, the collective work of the Constitutional Council, as well as the civic grass-root work that lead to the writing of the new constitutional proposal.
