Bystander

Hallgerður Hallgrímsdóttir, Nina Zurier

Nina Zurier, Gervilandslag 25.40.2, 2024.

New photographic works by Hallgerður Hallgrímsdóttir and Nina Zurier. The exhibition is part of the Iceland Photo Festival.

The works by Hallgerður on display are part of a series titled Invisible War / Visible War, which is based on found stereographs taken on glass plates during World War I, along with color images of vegetation that Hallgerður photographed on the fortress islands of Suomenlinna in Helsinki.

Nina is showing works from her series Artificial Landscapes, which consists of photographs created with the help of artificial intelligence. In these works, she raises provocative questions about authorship and the development of photography as a medium within a historical context. Repetition, word choice, and the photographer's instructions create imagined imagery in the photographs, so it could be said that she captures images of things that do not exist in reality.

The title of the exhibition, Bystander, thus refers, on the one hand, to the photographer’s activity, whether they are handling the camera, bringing old images to light, or creating them with an AI program. The photographer is rarely neutral, instead holding the power of the one who records history.
