Either Side of the Table
Hrafn Hólmfríðarson, Þórsteinn Svanhildarson
A joint exhibition by two photographers, whose lives are entwined with disability, albeit in different ways. Þórsteinn is a carer, whilst Hrafn receives care. Hrafn Hólmfríðarson (Krummi) (b.1990) suffered a brain stem hemorrhage in 2009 which left him physically disabled. As a result, he has a balance disorder along with limited fine motor control, and a reduced sense of touch on the right side of his body. Through his photography, Hrafn provides a glimpse into his life that he shares with his mother, Fríða. Þórsteinn Svanhildarson (b. 1988) had his daughter, Sól, in the summer of 2021. Sól was born with a very rare syndrome called Rubinstein Taybi, which causes both intellectual and physical disabilities. In his work, Þórsteinn exhibits photographs from the family’s day to day, who despite numerous challenges, try to lead a normal life. Through a visual dialogue, they share their perspectives and gain an understanding of the ripple effects that disability has on their immediate environment. The exhibition is part of The Icelandic Photo Festival.
