Mörk / Innan marka

Fríða Katrín Bessadóttir

LG // Litla Gallery - Frída Katrin Bessadottir - 2024

Welcome to the boundaries of language.

According to the dictionary, the word “Mörk” can mean three things, a unit of measurement for weight/250 grams, forest/open area on land, open field, bare area or what separates two things from each other.

You can also look at different declensions and conjunctions that can then form completely different meanings. Not only is the literal meaning of the word in the foreground, but the play on words. The word game allows us to play with the language, which is exactly what makes Icelandic so interesting. Is it then possible to work with the word to infinity?

With paintings and sculptures, Friða Katrín plays with language. With sharp edges and clear brushstrokes, she draws out the clarity of the K in “Mörk”.

Fríða Katrín graduated from the Fine Arts Department of the Iceland University of the Arts in the spring 2021. Now she teaches at the Myndlistarskóli Kópavogs as well as being a part of KANNSKI gallery as a social media manager.

In her practise, She has focused on performances and their connections to performing arts. Her works dealt extensively with the interplay between reality and fiction, drawing upon both her personal experiences and those of others, and reimagining them to either deceive the audience or prompt them to fill in the blanks.

This autumn, Fríða Katrín will embark on a new journey as she will start her Master's studies in Creative Performance Practice (Acting) in Sitges, Barcelona.
