Sun Dog
Jasa Baka
During the natural phenomenon of a Sun Dog, where a rainbow appears around the sun, many cultures believe this occurrence to be fortuitous. Ancient Greeks believed that Zeus’ dogs were walking across the sky, perhaps this is where the English name Sun Dog comes from. Native Americans believe that it tells of a spiritual guardian’s presence and that the material and metaphysical realms are merging together or a doorway to another dimension is opening. Other cultures believe that it brings a shield of protection, messages from the afterlife or gives an invitation to go deeper into ourselves. I believe in Animism, that all “things” or “objects” are alive and possess a life-force and energy. With this work I want to create a portal of opportunity for any guest to feel the invited phenomena of nature. Since a rainbow needs both rain and sun to exist at the same time to occur, we can also use this portal to balance the light and dark within ourselves.
While this portal is open all kinds of creatures have surfaced visible in the paintings, risograph prints and drawings.
Jasa Baka‘s artwork holds space for esoteric playfulness with animistic beings, natural magic and portals to inspired mythologies. In her art practice, she creates Eventful Vessels, sculptures which evolve from automatic drawings and paintings. These sculptures are an ongoing animistic collaboration where she is in dialogue between intermediary beings from a subconscious realm, the subconscious nature of materials, and her own oneiric subconscious nature. She channels archetypes and natural phenomena combined with her own manifested characters often from the sacred feminine. The beings in her work surrounding these archetypes have a cuteness to them which is important to help carry the parallel intensity that they hold.
