The Return

Endurkoman, Anna Hallin & Olga Bergmann

"The Return" draws inspiration from 5000-year-old Mesopotamian eye idols that were discovered during an archaeological excavation in Tell Brak, Syria just before World War II, and various ideas about the origin and role of these idols. The work deals with shifts in time, location, and culture with clues in the spirit of archaeological excavation, shedding new light on the cultural and geological context of the objects.

"The Return" is in dialogue with the work "Missing Time" that Olga and Anna exhibited at the Nordic Biennial Momentum 9 - Alienation in Norway in 2017.The philosopher Michel Foucault used archaeological methods to demonstrate that modernity is a consequence of the past, but that the past is only partially recorded. This recording process is based on a system of exclusion that determines what enters human history. What doesn't fit into the system is excluded from documentation, making history patchy and open to fiction. Fiction fills in these gaps and creates the possibility of looking at history from a new perspective.

Since 2005, Olga and Anna have collaborated on numerous works and projects. These include art exhibitions at home and abroad, for example at the National Gallery of Iceland, Kling and Bang Gallery, The Icelandic Folk and Outsider Art Museum, at the Einar Jónsson Museum, and at the Nordic Biennial Momentum in Moss, Norway. In addition, they have created works for public spaces, both temporary works in the form of indoor and outdoor installations, and pieces for public spaces and official buildings. For example, an outdoor artwork for the prison at Hólmsheiði and works for the service buildings of Reykjavík Cemeteries in Gufuneskirkjugarður.

The relationship between humans and nature, and their shared interest in the intersections of science and art, cultural history and fiction, are fundamental themes in their collaborative projects. They examine this interplay in the context of history and the present, but especially the potential manifestations of this interaction in the future.
