In Norse mythology, sailors who sensed the power o In Norse mythology, sailors who sensed the power of the wind and waves around them assumed that the mythical figure Himinglæva (meaning transparent, shining, and small wave) was embodying the water and propelling their vessels across the ocean.

@ElinHansdottir 's sculpture Himinglæva is an Aeolian harp which produces diverse sounds based on the force of the wind traveling through it, encouraging passersby to "listen" to the land and contemplate their situatedness with their natural surroundings.

You can find Himinglæva outside @HarpaReykjavik where it was recently unveiled as a gift from the state and city for the building's 10th anniversary.

Seven new exhibitions are opening at @kuenstlerhau Seven new exhibitions are opening at @kuenstlerhaus.bethanien this Thursday, including a show by @ElinHansdottir where she will present the installation Eigenzeit.

In Eigenzeit, you navigate around semi-transparent hanging fabrics printed with the custom geometric patterns typically printed on identity documents and currency to prevent forgery. Interspersed are gold-plated clover leaves and photographs of scale models of the installation, creating her characteristic spatial distortion to alter the viewers’ perceptions of space.

On the opening day the current artists in residence will also be opening their studios, so make sure to visit @AnnaJuliaFridbjorns who just started her year long residency!

The exhibition openings and open studios will take place on the 19th from 19-22. Eigenzeit is open until the 12th of June. For those in Iceland, you can enjoy Elín Hansdóttir's work with her recently unveiled sculpture Himinglæva outside @HarpaReykjavik

The Icelandic Folk and Outsider Art Museum @safnas The Icelandic Folk and Outsider Art Museum @safnasafnid is open for the summer with twelve brand new exhibitions.

Safnasafnið was founded in 1995 by artist Níels Hafstein and his wife, psychiatric nurse Magnhildur Sigurðardóttir. Initially they collected artworks by all major contemporary folk artists and autodidacts in Iceland whose work is seen as outside the cultural mainstream. Gradually they also added to the collection works by renowned contemporary artists. Whether outsider or mainstream, the museum focuses on work - in their own words - by artists who have a real and direct connection to an original creational spirit; true, unspoiled and free.

The Icelandic Folk and Outsider Art Museum is located in Svalbarðsströnd, a 10 minute drive from Akureyri, and is open daily until the 11th of September.
